Biodiversity

For quite a small island, Danjugan boasts a rich array of ecosystems and species! Before Danjugan was a declared a sanctuary, science surveys were done to characterize and describe the island. Scientists and volunteers were able to log 244 hard coral species, 572 marine fish species, 17 mangrove and associated species, 74 bird species, 10 bat species, 10 butterfly species, 2 nesting sea turtle species and notes have been made to new species encounters each year.

The island is home to 7 viable ecosystems – limestone forests, mangrove forests, white sand beaches, lagoons, caves, seagrass beds and coral reefs. To see so many ecosystems in one small island makes it the best place to learn about them and their strong connectivity to one another.
